Trump's Bold Move: Why the U.S. Should Acquire Greenland (2026)

LARRY KUDLOW: President Trump is absolutely correct in his assertion that the U.S. should take control of Greenland.

"For the past two decades, NATO has been urging Denmark to address the Russian threat looming over Greenland, yet they have failed to take significant action. The time for this to change is now, and it will be implemented!" This is a direct quote from President Donald J. Trump on Truth Social, and he is undeniably right. For years, both Denmark and NATO have had ample opportunities to respond to the escalating dangers posed by China and Russia in the vicinity of Greenland, but little has been done to mitigate these risks.

As President Trump aptly pointed out, Denmark's current defense capabilities amount to just "two dog sleds for protection," with one being added only recently. It’s clear that the United States can no longer afford to wait. In another post on Truth Social, the President highlighted that the U.S. has attempted to purchase Greenland for over 150 years, yet Denmark has consistently declined these offers. He stated, "now, due to the Golden Dome and advanced modern weapon systems, both offensive and defensive, acquiring Greenland has become even more critical." He also emphasized the national security implications for the U.S., stating that the investment of hundreds of billions of dollars into the Golden Dome must include Greenland.

Nearly every credible analyst concurs with President Trump’s assessments regarding the strategic significance of Greenland amidst rising threats from both China and Russia. The President’s desire for a direct acquisition of the island is understandable given these circumstances.

In many respects, securing Greenland represents a crucial aspect of Mr. Trump’s broader strategy to bolster the defense of the Western Hemisphere while countering the influence of China and Russia, aiming to shift historical trends toward greater freedom. If NATO chooses to assist, that would be a welcome addition, but the urgency of the situation means we cannot rely on Denmark, which has proven to be unreliable, defenseless, and ineffective.

President Trump is intensifying his stance by warning of substantial tariff penalties starting February 1st, which "will remain in effect until a comprehensive deal for the total purchase of Greenland is reached."

This approach is quintessentially Trump, capturing everyone's attention—and that’s undoubtedly a positive development. One can only hope that European leaders will quickly recognize the importance of Greenland. Perhaps even discussions at Davos this week could yield some movement on this front. Importantly, Mr. Trump remains open to negotiations. Amid the media frenzy surrounding his Greenland policies, one pivotal line from his recent Truth Social post has been overlooked. Allow me to quote it:

"The United States of America is immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these countries that have put so much at risk, despite all that we have done for them, including maximum protection, over so many decades." This crucial statement reveals that while the President is serious about Greenland, he is also willing to engage in dialogue.
