In Chattanooga, Tennessee, a startling rise in health insurance premiums is set to impact residents in 2026, with the most sought-after plans seeing an increase of 39%. This staggering adjustment ranks as the fourth largest hike across the United States.

As we step into the new year, it's essential to note that the average monthly premium for a silver-tier plan—the most popular choice among Tennessee residents—has reached an unprecedented $775.

To navigate these changes, we consulted Talon Abernathy, a health insurance specialist from ValuePenguin by LendingTree, who shared vital insights about the options available to Tennesseans during this challenging period.

"Currently, around 60% of individuals utilizing marketplace health insurance through healthcare.gov opt for silver plans, which are considered a balanced choice. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, you might want to explore the Bronze plans. While these tend to have lower monthly payments, remember that the out-of-pocket costs for doctor visits can be higher," Abernathy explained.

He also emphasized the importance of checking your medication needs before selecting a plan. "If you're on any medications or anticipate needing some soon, ensure that your prescriptions are covered under the plan's formulary—a list of drugs that all health insurance policies must include. Additionally, take time to understand the co-pays and co-insurance you will incur when visiting the pharmacy, as these expenses can vary significantly between different plans."

As we look ahead, it's critical to be aware of the upcoming deadlines for open enrollment for health insurance coverage in 2026. The enrollment period begins on November 1, 2025, and typically concludes on January 15, 2026. This timeline allows for coverage to start as early as January 1, 2026. However, if you miss the January 15 deadline, those who sign up by December 15 will have their coverage begin on February 1, 2026.

Although enhanced subsidies will no longer be available in 2026, financial assistance remains accessible. For individuals earning under approximately $63,000, or families of four making less than around $129,000, there will still be significant support when purchasing health insurance through healthcare.gov. "This financial aid could drastically reduce your overall health insurance costs, so I highly encourage everyone to explore what subsidies they might qualify for," Abernathy added.

Health experts strongly advise patients to consider all available options when searching for health insurance. Tennessee residents should be prepared for an average increase of 17% in deductibles and a 13% uptick in out-of-pocket maximums (OOPM)—the annual limit on what you spend for deductibles, copays, and coinsurance within a year. Notably, silver plans will experience the highest average deductible increase, which stands at 20%.

But here’s where it gets controversial: with premiums soaring, how do we balance our healthcare needs against our budgets? What strategies can individuals employ to ensure they are getting the most value from their health insurance? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
