Imagine facing your biggest dream while navigating unimaginable personal loss. That's exactly where Sheinelle Jones finds herself, stepping into the co-host chair on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle. But here's the question that everyone's asking: Can she find joy and success amidst such profound grief? Let's go behind the scenes of her first day and explore the journey that brought her here.
January 16th, 2026, marked not just a new year, but a brand-new chapter for Sheinelle. While she's always been known for her killer dance moves – think Janet Jackson or Beyoncé – this new role requires a different kind of rhythm. It's about finding her groove alongside Jenna Bush Hager, her longtime friend, colleague, and now, co-host.
For over a year, since Hoda Kotb's departure in January 2025, Jenna had been holding down the fourth hour of TODAY with a rotating cast of guest co-hosts. The search was finally over: Sheinelle was officially taking her place. "I love to dance. But it’s a new dance for me,” Sheinelle confessed, “So right now I’m just trying to look at the moves, pick up the steps and make it my own as a dancer would.” It’s a beautiful analogy for navigating this new phase of her career.
This moment is the culmination of a lifelong ambition. Growing up in Wichita, Kansas, Sheinelle dreamed of being an anchor, even creating a vision board filled with pictures of local newscasters. This was long before vision boards were trendy! She even included affirmations her mother wrote on Post-Its. By high school, she was interning at a local news station, and then continued her broadcasting pursuits at Northwestern University.
And this is the part most people miss: it wasn't just about her career ambitions. At Northwestern, she had a chance meeting with Uche Ojeh, a high school senior visiting the campus. Though not an official tour guide, she showed the "cute" student around. Little did she know, this impromptu tour would lead to marriage and three children: Kayin, now 16, and twins Clara and Uche, 13.
But here's where it gets controversial... Life took a devastating turn. In October 2023, Uche developed an unusual stutter, which tragically turned out to be a symptom of an aggressive form of brain cancer. He passed away in May of the following year. Just seven months later, on New Year's Eve, Sheinelle lost her beloved grandmother, Josephine Vonceal Pace Brown, a key figure and ardent supporter in her life. Some might say that taking on a new high-profile job so soon after such loss is too much. What do you think?
This new chapter, therefore, is bittersweet: a dream realized alongside profound personal loss. Sheinelle admits she longs for the day she doesn't have to “fight for my joy.” "We can’t just act like there’s not a big old elephant there,” she says, acknowledging her grief.
Despite the difficult days, Sheinelle is embracing this opportunity head-on. "The truth is, I am front and center now, and people are watching to see what this new chapter will be,” she explained. "I mean, if Uche were alive, and everything was as it was, and I got this job, it was going to be a big deal. But considering what I’ve been through, it’s more than a reality show. You wouldn’t even believe it.”
Like viewers, Sheinelle is curious to see how it all unfolds. "I’m like, ‘What are you going to do now? What are you going to do with this?’ I’m out-of-body watching myself — and I’m rooting for me.”
Heading into this new era, it's clear Sheinelle has a strong support system. An hour before the first show, stage manager Yosef Herzog offered a hug and words of encouragement. "We're rooting for you,” he said. Moments later, Craig Melvin cheered her on. Savannah Guthrie, recovering from vocal cord surgery, called via FaceTime to offer her love. Sheinelle responded tearfully, “I love you. Forever and ever.”
During the pre-show meeting, filled with producers, Jenna, and Sheinelle, there was banter, debate, and even personal stories that triggered both laughter and tears. Sheinelle shared a text from Uche, sent the day Hoda announced her departure, predicting she would be the one to take over. The energy was palpable, a mix of anticipation and uncertainty.
"I feel like this is the grown-up version of student council, and I get to represent not necessarily my classmates, but I get to represent all of these people who have put confidence in me, to will me here, to put me here,” Sheinelle said before the show's debut.
However, TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle is a departure from what Sheinelle is used to. "I’ve been doing news for the last 25-30 years and I know it forward and backward,” she says. "When I was doing the 3rd Hour, it’s very regimented and you know what’s coming next. I found peace in the rhythm of it.”
This new "rhythm" is a significant change. Unlike news, TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle is a talk show, unscripted and in the moment. There aren't producers feeding cues through earpieces. Despite being a self-described "over-preparer,” Sheinelle is embracing the spontaneity.
"It’s the first time I don’t have a template. I don’t know what this looks like. I don’t know where it’s going. I know I have the skillset to do the job, I know my heart is in the right place, I know that it’s time for a new challenge, I know that I’m so wrapped in love from people I’ve never met and I feel it more than I’ve ever felt it before, more than I could have ever imagined possible,” she explained.
"I feel like I am coming into the game as good as it’s going to get to succeed. But I’ve never done this before, so it’s new for me.”
As the producer meeting wrapped up, Sheinelle expressed her desire to meet everyone's expectations. "I just want to live up to the eyes that you’re giving. Right now, the eyes are of expectation, and after, I would like (them to) be that I stuck the landing.” Jenna reassured her, “You’re going to stick the landing.”
Minutes before 10 a.m., Studio 1A buzzed with staff, photographers, the camera crew, and colleagues like Dylan Dreyer, Laura Jarrett, and Al Roker. When the lights came up, Jenna and Sheinelle walked out to their new theme song, written and performed by Blessing Offor.
"It’s my real-life, literal walkout song because there’s so much meaning behind it," Sheinelle said. Blessing is an artist they both admire. When Uche was sick, Jenna sent Sheinelle Blessing's song “Brighter Days,” a gesture she deeply appreciated. The fact that Offor and her late husband shared Nigerian heritage added even more significance. "What a cosmic gift, divine gift,” she said. “Every time I hear it, it’s going to give me a little pep in my step because of the meaning behind it.”
With the show underway, a new era of TODAY had officially begun. This is the latest chapter in a story that started in 2008, when Kathie Lee Gifford joined Hoda for a new fourth hour of TODAY, dubbed TODAY with Kathie Lee & Hoda. The show featured candid conversation, celebrity guests, and plenty of wine.
"I remember watching Kathie Lee, and I felt like she was so good at it, the craft of it,” Sheinelle recalled. She added that, beyond her skill, it was about how she made people feel. Now that she's in that chair, Sheinelle hopes to do the same. "I can’t be Kathie Lee, but I can be my own 2026 version of that, because I’ve always loved that part of television. It was beyond my wildest dreams that I could be in a chair to do something like that,” she said.
She also recognizes the responsibility that comes with the position. "This show is bigger than me and it’s bigger than the chair. It’s what it represents, which is people being able to turn on consistently, every day, whether things are feeling chaotic in your own life or chaotic in the world,” Sheinelle said. “If things aren’t great — or maybe they are — you just know that those people are going to be there and we’re going to just have a good time for an hour. And if it’s kind of a challenging time, we’ll talk about that, too.”
When Kathie Lee left in 2019, Jenna stepped in, and the show became TODAY with Hoda & Jenna. They co-hosted for six years before Hoda took her leave. "(Hoda) brings her heart, she brings her intellect, she brings her past, she brings all of it to the table, and I watched her do that day in and day out,” Sheinelle said. "I take it as such an honor that now I am here, and I feel like I get to hold the baton for a little bit.”
Or maybe a "wine torch," as Hoda and Kathie Lee reunited to surprise Sheinelle minutes into the first show. Offering a toast, the two former co-hosts joined Jenna and Sheinelle in drinking to “fun” and “sisterhood,” with Kathie Lee adding, “May it grow every day as ours did.”
Jenna expects that to happen in the future. "I know (Sheinelle) well. We don’t know everything about each other, and I think that will be really fun, to discover and watch our friendship deepen," Jenna explained before the show launch. "I adored Hoda, and she became one of the closest people in my life,” she added. “So I’m excited for that, because I loved getting to meet all these new friends over the last year. It’s been so fun, and I’ve made friendships, but it’s a different thing to sit with somebody and build something from the ground up every single day.”
Sheinelle echoed the sentiment. “When I first met Jenna, I was blown away by her candor, her warmth, her wit, her ‘I-don’t-give-a-flip’ sometimes. She has, to me, a beautiful cocktail of qualities,” she said.
Sheinelle is also excited about the uncertainty of what lies ahead. "I’m kind of approaching my life that way at this point, where you prepare, and that way you sit down and you have a game plan, but leave a little bit of breathing room for just a little spontaneity. God knows, between the two of us, there’s plenty of room for that,” she continued with a laugh. “And I’m really excited to have a space for us to try.”
Soon after Hoda and Kathie Lee left the studio, the show had another surprise: two students from Sheinelle’s alma mater, Northwestern, came to let her know she’s on their “Mount Rushmore of journalists.”
"I’m a big believer in ‘if you can see it, you can be it,’ and knowing that it’s possible by watching (Sheinelle) do it makes it even more possible for me,” Northwestern senior Jessica Watts said.
Then, in another emotional moment, Kassandra Fleming Hayes, the woman who inspired Sheinelle to become a journalist, walked out. Sheinelle had spent decades trying to find Hayes, but with no luck. "You don’t understand, I wanted to be you,” Sheinelle told Hayes through tears. Hayes told Sheinelle she always had a “spark” and added, “I’m incredibly proud.”
After a few more segments, day one of TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle officially wrapped. Once the cameras turned off, Sheinelle asked, “How did you find Kassandra? Who found her?”, followed by cheers, tears, flowers, and hugs.
Talia Parkinson-Jones, executive producer of Jenna & Sheinelle, congratulated the duo, saying, “A beautiful, beautiful, beautiful team. A beautiful show. I’m so excited. It was the perfect first day. You guys are so perfect together.”
"My legs are still shaking. It was amazing,” Sheinelle said.
More amazing is that she knows she didn't do it alone. "I’ve always felt on my first day with Jenna, (Uche) would be there,” she said. “And he wanted it for me more than I wanted it for myself. … I’ve had as close as you can get to feeling — not even feeling, knowing — that he’s with me, and that he is here and that he is rooting for me.”
And it’s not just her late husband, but her Grandmama, too. "Now I just have more angels to talk to,” Sheinelle said. “It gives me strength, it makes me feel like when I walk into a space, I’m not alone. It’s comforting to me. I may look like I’m by myself, but I’ve got a whole galaxy squad helping me.”
