Its creators, Archier, sought to create a home that honored and embraced its bushland surroundings, minimizing its physical and visual impact on the environment.
Blurring the Lines
"We wanted Ora House to soften the distinction between architecture and terrain," explains Chris Haddad, one of Archier's directors. Instead of relying on bricks and mortar to separate the home from its environment, Archier utilized landscaping as a unifying force. The result is a home that feels like an extension of its natural setting, with a low wall and a layered garden bed replacing the typical fortress-like fences.
A Sense of Community
The owners of Ora House opted for an open and immersive design, prioritizing a softer and more welcoming relationship with the street. "It was important that privacy was balanced with a sense of civic presence," Haddad adds. Cohesive Design
Ora House had to accommodate the needs of a family of four, as well as a Chinese medicine practice run by one of the owners. The challenge was to create a cohesive whole, blending domestic and commercial spaces seamlessly. This was achieved through a consistent design language and, importantly, through the landscaping. A steel walkway, dusted in ochre rust and flanked by native plants, leads to the practice's entrance, seamlessly integrating it into the home's surroundings.
Interior Harmony
The interior design, led by Studio A.mi, reflects a deep commitment to honoring the home's context. Local makers were engaged to craft pieces that exude intelligence, restraint, and a quiet beauty that invites patina. Handmade terracotta tiles from a centuries-old Florentine maker cover the living area floors, while Japanese hand-pressed tiles are incorporated into bespoke joinery and furniture.
Immersion in Nature
Floor-to-ceiling windows eliminate barriers to the outdoors, but the most remarkable feature is the internal garden. Located in the heart of the home, it connects the living space to the rumpus room, creating a playful and immersive experience. "It shapes the experience of moving through the house," Haddad says.
