Lorenzo Musetti faced an emotional setback at the Australian Open that he described as something he could have never anticipated. This Italian tennis star, currently ranked No. 5 in the PIF ATP Rankings, was forced to withdraw from his very first quarter-final match at this prestigious tournament after taking a commanding lead against Novak Djokovic.
During a remarkable performance that lasted nearly two hours, Musetti showcased his skills and appeared on the verge of advancing to the semi-finals. However, his promising match took a turn due to an injury affecting his upper right leg. Struggling with mobility, Musetti made the difficult decision to retire while trailing 1-3 in the third set. In his post-match press conference, he shared that the pain had been building and wasn't an unexpected occurrence.
"I noticed something odd in my right leg at the start of the second set," Musetti explained. "Even though I was playing exceptionally well, I could sense the discomfort intensifying, and it was clear that the issue wasn't resolving itself. When I took a medical timeout for three minutes, I hoped to recover, but when I resumed play, the pain only escalated. There’s not much more to say about it."
As the crowd rallied behind him, wishing him a swift recovery, Musetti was keenly aware that he was in an enviable position—on the brink of his first win against Djokovic in four attempts at Grand Slam events and only his second victory in eleven encounters overall. The 23-year-old athlete reflected on how devastating the timing of this injury was for him.
"Absolutely, this is undoubtedly the most challenging injury situation I've encountered in my career," he admitted. "Honestly, I never envisioned what it would feel like to be leading two sets to zero against someone like Novak and then being unable to continue. To have that kind of advantage and then be compelled to withdraw is something I never expected. It’s incredibly painful."
Despite his determination to continue playing even after receiving treatment from the tournament’s physiotherapist when the score was 1-2 in the second set, Musetti soon realized that finishing the match was not feasible.
"The injury was too severe to tape effectively," the two-time ATP Tour champion remarked. "I know my body well enough to confidently say that this feels like a muscle tear, and unfortunately, that’s the reality I’m facing."
