A last-minute change of heart! Liam Rosenior, the Chelsea manager, made a surprising U-turn during their recent match against Arsenal, leaving fans and players alike wondering about the fate of young talent, Dario Essugo. But what does this mean for Essugo's future with the team?
Essugo, a promising 20-year-old Portugal youth international, hasn't seen action for Chelsea since making a few brief appearances in the Club World Cup last summer. He was initially on the bench for the first three matches of the season, but injuries have unfortunately stalled his progress.
Rosenior, however, remains optimistic. He assures that Essugo will get his chance to shine in the first team. With Romeo Lavia still recovering from injury, Essugo is currently the only backup for Moises Caicedo.
“He was very close to coming on [against Arsenal],” Rosenior explained, revealing that he had initially called Essugo to enter the game. “That changed, because other things had happened… I felt I needed to keep Enzo [Fernandez] and Andrey [Santos] in the middle of the pitch because I thought Enzo was outstanding. Andrey, in his own way, was very good.”
Rosenior emphasized that Essugo is close to playing and is aware of his abilities. He wants to give him the perfect opportunity to showcase his skills. Essugo is training “very well,” and when asked if he can expect game time soon, Rosenior replied with a confident, “For sure. He’s a very good player.”
But here's where it gets interesting... Essugo was brought in from Sporting, partly because his underlying data was remarkably similar to Caicedo's, who is widely considered one of the best defensive midfielders globally.
What do you think? Will Essugo get the chance he deserves? Do you agree with Rosenior's decision to keep Fernandez and Santos on the field? Share your thoughts below!
