MANILA, Philippines - A sea of barefoot Filipino Catholics gathered in the heart of Manila for the annual procession of the centuries-old Jesus Christ statue, a spectacle that has captivated the nation for generations. But this year, the religious event took on a new significance as it coincided with a growing public outcry over a major corruption scandal.
The wooden statue of Jesus the Nazarene, a symbol of faith and tradition, was carried on an open carriage through the congested streets of Manila, drawing millions of devotees throughout the day and into the late night. Venus Lopez, a 62-year-old devotee, echoed these sentiments, hoping for the removal of corrupt officials from power. The life-size statue, believed to have been brought from Mexico in 1606, has endured fires, earthquakes, and World War II bombings, symbolizing resilience and mystical powers.
