In a stunning display of athleticism and skill, Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed at the Australian Open, has propelled herself into the quarterfinals. This remarkable achievement comes as she aims to secure her third title at this prestigious tournament in just four years. On Sunday, she triumphed over Canada’s 17th seed, Victoria Mboko, with a decisive score of 6-1, 7-6 (1).
Sabalenka's game was characterized by her formidable serving ability, as evidenced by her impressive three aces in the first set, allowing her to dominate the 19-year-old Canadian opponent in a mere 31 minutes. However, the second set proved to be a more challenging affair for Sabalenka. While she showed flashes of brilliance, a few unforced errors crept into her play, giving Mboko opportunities that could have shifted the match. The young Canadian showcased her talent and resilience, making her a tough competitor against many players, although it wasn't enough to overcome the two-time champion.
During her on-court interview, Sabalenka expressed her admiration for Mboko, saying, "What an incredible player for such a young age. It's amazing to witness these young talents emerging on the Tour. Sometimes I can't believe I'm saying this; I feel like I'm still a kid myself!" She acknowledged the pressure Mboko put on her, adding, "She pushed me so much, and I’m thrilled to have advanced."
At one point in the second set, Sabalenka held a commanding lead of 4-1, yet she faced challenges as she failed to convert three match points while ahead at 5-4. This allowed Mboko to regain some momentum, ultimately leading to a tiebreaker where Sabalenka's prowess shone through once again. She sealed her victory by dominating the tiebreak, marking her 20th consecutive tiebreak win. "I focus on treating it like any other point and not letting it feel like a tiebreak, and I believe that is the key to my consistency," she explained.
Having claimed the Grand Slam title in both 2023 and 2024, and finishing as a runner-up last year to Madison Keys, Sabalenka has firmly established her status in women's tennis. Moreover, she has also celebrated victories at two U.S. Open championships.
In other matches on Sunday at Rod Laver Arena, the men's top seed, Carlos Alcaraz from Spain, was set to compete against American Tommy Paul, who is seeded 19th, for a chance to move into the quarterfinals. Additionally, third-seeded Alexander Zverev and Coco Gauff, ranked third among the women, were also scheduled to play later in the day for their respective spots in the quarterfinal round.
