A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). But here's where it gets controversial... The temblor happened at 5:56 p.m. Pacific time, about 12 miles northeast of Indio, California, but the USGS initially reported a magnitude of 5.1. As seismologists review the data, they may revise the magnitude, and additional information could prompt USGS scientists to update the shake-severity map. But what's even more intriguing is the potential for aftershocks. These smaller earthquakes can occur days, weeks, or even years after the initial quake, and they can be of equal or larger magnitude. So, while the main shock may be over, the tremors could continue for some time. And this is the part most people miss... The USGS uses the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale to categorize shaking intensity, and aftershock data can reveal earthquakes within 100 miles and seven days of the initial quake.
